Why Was Writing Invented?

Throughout the ages, writing has been used to record beautiful poems, religious tomes, historical information, songs and much more. But that was not the inspiration for the writing system. No, the Sumerians had more important things to write about: Taxes, Inventory, and other record keeping. The first writings were tons of stone tablets, all records of distributed goods. The Sumerians were a very efficient government, mainly due to their strong middle-management.

They had priests record information about crops, and distribution. As cities became larger, fewer people grew their own food, so the people that did grow crops would have to supply those who didn't. The middle-management would survey the area to properly supply the populus.
